I cried when I didn’t get in.
And then again when I did.
Since I added the journalism major to my sociology major, I knew that I had to get on the coveted Florida FlyIns trip offered at the University of Florida with John Kaplan.
The week-long trip takes a group of about 12 UF students to another nation to document the lives of others and a relevant social issue.
I found out in April that I wasn’t in.
I found out in July by cell phone that someone had dropped.
The conversation went much like this:
John: Are you still interested?
Me: Oh my God! Yes!
So now here I am preparing to leave the U.S. for the first time in my life. This isn’t backpacking in Europe, either.
We are traveling to Zacapa, Guatemala–an area where malnutrition and hunger are daily battles for many.
My blog will document the experiences of a young journalist and sociologist learning about international journalism in a third world country and a description of an area of Guatemala not often visited.
I have a lot to learn.
So far, I can only ask about the whereabouts of the bathroom in Spanish.
